Concept

People have forgotten how intimate a letter is.

The name comes from a Georgian custom. When someone notices a lonely eyelash on your face, they ask you to choose: a letter, or happiness. Then you guess which side the eyelash is on.

Guess right, and they place the eyelash under your shirt, over your chest, so your wish comes true.

The two figures circling the title are Ali and Nino, after the moving statue in Batumi: two lovers who keep finding each other, passing through, and moving on.

Why the archive matters

Most feelings leave no trace. A letter does.

A feeling lasts a moment

Written down, it can be read again years later, by you or by a stranger who needed it that day.

History keeps the public record

It remembers wars, treaties and speeches. It rarely keeps what ordinary people felt on an ordinary Tuesday. This archive does.

A stranger’s letter is company

Reading someone else’s longing or joy tells you that what you feel has been felt before, and survived.

Together, letters become a portrait

Year by year, the archive shows how people here loved, missed and celebrated, in their own words and their own handwriting.
